Prairie Appreciation Day
We went to Prairie Appreciation Day in Thurston County, Washington. Here's the link: http://www.prairieappreciationday.org/.
This event takes place once a year at Glacial Heritage Preserve, somewhat south of the Mima Mound park. This is the one day you can come enjoy the area. If you want to visit at other times of the year, just contact the folks at the above link and volunteer to pull out Scotch Broom! Make it a group activity! What could be nicer.
Here are a couple of photos, or, as the young people say, "pics."
That handsome man is holding up "brooms" made up of the Scotch Broom that is being eradicated so the prairie native habitat can flourish.

I had no idea that you could actually make a broom out of scotch broom. Wikipedia says: Some attempts have been made to develop biological controls in affected areas, using three broom-feeding insects, the psyllid Arytainilla spartiophylla, the beetle Bruchidius villosus, and a moth Leucoptera spartifoliella.[11]
The Nature Conservancy staff said they use fire in a limited way, but they have to make sure there is enough habitat left while they do this, because there is so little prairie habitat left for some of the species that exist there. I think the "scotch broom" is just funny. We have a lot of scotch broom here. I have often wondered if it could be used for some useful compound economically. Then folks would be harvesting it, lots easier to get rid of that way, unless people started growing it for money!
Well written article.
